Blueback Project Tracker

The Blueback Project Tracker is a plug-in for Petrel* for data managers to track and monitor Petrel projects from all their Petrel users.

  • Do you know where your Petrel users are saving Petrel projects?
  • Do you have defined policies and processes for Petrel project storage?
  • Are your Petrel users loyal and consistent with the Petrel reference projects?
  • Do you have much duplication of seismic data?
  • How are you progressing with merging Petrel projects to the new Petrel version?

The Blueback Project Tracker will search through all your specified disks on the network and populate a SQL database with Petrel project information from all your projects.

With an easy-to-use web interface, the Blueback Project Tracker is an excellent tool for data managers to get an overview of Petrel project content and monitor changes over time.

In the web interface you can monitor and view your Petrel project data management issues, like a project watch list or Petrel version migration etc.

The Blueback Project Tracker is not accessible inside Petrel, but is a tool used by the data managers responsible for maintaining order and structure of the Petrel project files on the various network disks.

The Blueback Project Tracker provides extensive information about the Petrel project content and history. With a powerful and customizable search engine, you can quickly identify data inconsistencies, duplications, reference project relations and changes over time. The Blueback Project Tracker is a powerful and much needed toolkit for controlling and managing an increasing number of Petrel projects scattered around your disks.

Spatial Extension

Coupled with the Blueback Project Tracker, the Spatial Extension plug-in integrates Petrel with Esri ArcGis®, enabling the visualization of these detected Petrel project data management issues.

  • Build Esri ArcMap® display layers by extracting data from your Petrel projects as tracked and monitored by the Blueback Project Tracker
  • Get map view of all Petrel data across all Petrel projects from the Blueback Project Tracker database
  • Detect mis-positioned Petrel data
  • Inspect Petrel data in map view
  • Detect Petrel reference data duplications
  • Locate data not contained in reference projects

Functionality Highlights

  • Acquire and maintain an overview of your Petrel projects from all the users and on all your network drives
  • Establish and control Petrel project data management processes to prevent chaotic an uncontrollable project storing
  • Monitor changes over time in Petrel projects and Petrel project migration processes. Highlight breaches in processes and best practices for data managers
  • Identify projects with data duplication (seismic) to assist disk usage optimization
  • Identify data inconsistencies and relationship with Petrel reference projects
  • Compare two or more projects to look for inconsistencies or difference in content - commonly needed when comparing project copies
  • List large project files and/or data object files to identify where you might have disk space issues
  • Graphical displays of Petrel project dependencies, e.g. which projects that are connected to which reference projects; projects that are copies of others etc. This helps you get an overview of the situation with Petrel project relationships
  • Detailed data mining and search in a selected project or all projects, to help you locate or identify specific data
  • Monitor which network disks the users save their projects on. Avoid having projects saved in unwanted locations. Always keep your Blueback Project Tracker database up to date and reliable through daily/nightly scans
  • List Petrel users and their projects. Identify users with large projects or strong growth in specific data types, disk space etc.
  • Open database for customized reporting
  • List and compare coordinate systems across projects

Through regular monitoring of your network disks you have many possibilities for displaying various metrics from your Petrel projects. From disk usage, changes in project content etc.
